To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark.

Reading to your child:
- Choose a book that you and your child will enjoy together.
- Read for a short time daily. Make it a habit.
- Hold the book so that you can both see the pictures and the print.
- Before you start, read the title, look at the cover, and wonder together what the story will be about.
- Spend time talking about the pictures and the story as you read. Encourage your child to participate.
- During the story ask your child questions that will get him or her thinking about what is happening in the story and what might happen as the story progresses. For example, I wonder what this story will be about? I wonder what will happen next? How does the character feel? Could this happen in real life? Does this remind you of something that happened to you? What would you do if you were there? Ask your child what their favourite part of the story was and why that was their favourite part. Ask your child to re-tell the story-what happened in the beginning, middle and end of the story.
- Read and re-read your child’s favourite books.
- Stop when your child indicates that he/she has had enough.
- Relax and enjoy this time together!
